My third grade students attend a public school in a very rural area of South Carolina. Our school is a Title 1 school and has over a 90% poverty index. The majority of students in preschool through fifth grade receive subsidized school meals. I currently have 29 students enrolled in my third grade class. Most families in our community can provide only the basic essential needs. Typically students have limited literacy materials available in their homes and the closest public county library is 20 miles away. Many of the families live in mobile homes and some even in motels.
