My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds, low to middle income families, as well as culturally diverse. Many of my students have parents that do not speak English or live in a one parent household. This year I am teaching 8th grade regular and inclusion special education classes. Some of my students are learning disabled and have emotional disabilities. My students have limited resources to become culturally knowledgeable or aesthetically literate. They are generally not exposed to art and do not visit museums on a regular basis. For my students both special education and regular education the art room is a safe haven. Some are successful here where they might not be in any other classroom. We turn "mistakes"into "happy surprises" and their self esteem thrives. In art students can talk, move around and we always listen to music. Art is a language that we all can speak!
