My students are the hardest working in the city of Chicago. They have agreed to attend a three-year, year-round high school in order to better their chances of obtaining a high school diploma. Although we are a neighborhood school that is not selective enrollment, we have a higher graduation rate than our district (86.7%!) as well as a higher attendance rate (91.4%!). Our kids truly are hard working and amazing, attending school until 4:15 PM. However, only 54.4% of our graduates are enrolled in college. We want to make sure that that number increases and reflects the hard work our students are doing. Many of my students are first-generation high school graduates living in a gang-infested neighborhood. It is hard for them to picture themselves attending college because they have a lack of role models and the challenge of college scares them.
