Fourth grade is a high-stakes year in the state of Louisiana. In the spring, students take a state exam testing their ability to understand nonfiction texts and write eloquently. Students must pass the exam to move onto the next grade. This goal is a daunting one for our group because my students are typically several academic years behind many of their peers from higher-income communities. The majority of my students are from low-income households and lack fundamental reading and writing skills. However, they are certainly capable of passing the state exam by working hard to close the achievement gap. As a matter of fact, last year, a handful of fourth graders scored above average on the ELA portion of the state exam, while the fourth grade group as a whole improved their ELA scores from the previous year by 30%.
