The students that I teach are all amazing kids, struggling to find the genius within themselves. Teaching them has truly made me appreciate the simple things in life. Our school is located in the heart of a tough urban community. Many of our students struggle with the most basic concepts. Keeping their interest and enthusiasm in education high is often a struggle. A student with a mother in prison or a father dying from HIV, are not as focused on their studies as the average student. Many of our students are not typical. In my years teaching at our school, I have rarely met both parents of a child. Often times the guardians work day and evening so some of our kids are home alone. It shocked me when I first required students to bring back signed slips that their parents had read my syllabus. One student raised his hand and said he needed more time, "I only see my mom on Thursdays". Another said she is asleep when her mom gets home and only sees her on her days off.
