My students are members of a small K-12 rural school district. I teach a diverse set of students in an agriculturally-driven community. Due to our proximity to a military base, state park, and many large K-12 school districts, many of my students' home situations are ever changing. For example, due to seasonal employment of many parents, whether at the local state park or area boat factory, many families have to choose between heat in the winter or gas money to drive to work. When facing economic hardships, many families move in and out of the district to be closer to work or to share utility bills with extended family, thus creating a transient school community. Our school is the heart of this rural community and is the only source of stability for the majority of its students.
