AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a program focused at preparing students in the "academic middle" who have the potential to go to college, but without the support of AVID, might not reach that goal. AVID students have their eyes on the prize - college! Being the first in your family to attend college can be a fairly overwhelming goal and process, but the AVID program in grades 6 - 12 helps students jump over hurdles that would normally hold them back. I have great students. They love learning. They will run through walls for their teachers. They attend a school that with limited resource is one the highest performing regular public schools in the state of Oregon. Our school is close to 1000 students strong and each room is packed to capacity with students, but neither they nor the teachers are using that as an excuse to do anything but increase their focus.
