My students live in a very low income area of a small town. This area is known for its poverty and crime. Our friendly, clean school is a safe haven for the students. Ninety percent of the students receive free or reduced breakfast and lunch. For some of the students, this is the only hot food they have each day. Many of the children have never traveled farther than a few miles from home. Most parents struggle to keep them fed and clothed. There is very little time for academics and discovery. Many times there are multiple generations living together and raising the children. Sometimes it is a great grandmother who has assumed responsibility for raising the children because no one else is around.
