My students come to second grade with a strong foundation in basic literacy, and we work hard to build upon those skills to help students read with a purpose and for meaning. They are curious about the the world around them- people, places, things, ideas, controversies, etc. I am thrilled when I hear my students ask thought-provoking, critical, and analytical questions, and I want to foster those curiosities! Questions such as these provide the perfect opportunity to help students discover resources, develop research skills, and evaluate sources of information. But, it can be difficult to ensure that second graders are getting their information from quality, age-appropriate resources- especially when we are seeking to answer questions about current events or social issues.
