I am asking for a class set of the nonfiction book Fred Korematsu Stands Up. This classroom set of books will continue to enhance the print-rich and diverse classroom that I strive to provide for my diverse students. Through reading and discussing this nonfiction book, students will be immersed in the feelings and life of Fred Korematsu. By incorporating free verse, informational text, narrative vignettes, and images, students get a compelling portrait of an often-forgotten civil rights hero while they are exposed to a variety of types of text. Our students today are the leaders of tomorrow. As such, it is vital that they are exposed to books such as this where they can see and celebrate personal acts of resilience. In doing so, students are able to realize the power of their own voices in changing their community, nation, and world for the better. In addition, students will get a first hand lesson in the importance of assessing news and information with a critical eye towards bias and perspective, the need for evidence to back up claims, and analyzing propaganda.
