Your donations will provide the English department with a class set of the novel Fahrenheit 451. Fahrenheit 451 is not only a canonical piece of literature, but it is also an early exemplar of Dystopian literature, a genre that has seen significant attraction and relevance in today's culture. I believe that the novel will resonate with my students, and I believe that they will make meaningful connections between the novel and their own lives. It will serve as a foundation for my students' understanding of how literature can mirror, critique, and even be prophetic about society at large. I will leverage Fahrenheit 451 in such a way that it encourages and promotes critical thinking while simultaneously building upon and developing foundational reading skills that will benefit my students for years to come - both inside and outside of traditional classrooms. My students yearn to be empowered. It is a feeling that is largely unknown to many of them. I believe that this unit will provide them with this much needed sense of empowerment, with a belief that they are capable of sincere, authentic, meaningful control over their lives and the world around them.
