My students are eager to view and analyze challenging, intellectual Japanese and Latin American films as part of a film club. Many students are interested in journalism as a career and want to practice being film critics. When one student proposed a semester-long independent study for credit on the films of Akira Kurosawa, I was happy to oblige and offer a one-on-one tutorial. The school's large Latino population is also thrilled by the idea of expanding our Spanish-language film collection. My school is Title 1, with a large percentage of students receiving reduced or free lunch. It is a school of rich cultural diversity, talent, ambition, creativity, and unique people who march to the beat of their own drums. I want to encourage and support my students' in their pursuit of unusual areas of study. Although Kurosawa and the Latin art-house films are not widely used in public school curriculum, I want to give my students the chance to follow their passions wherever they lead
