My students are enrolled in a rare elective in Texas public schools: Mexican-American Literature. Together, we explore identity and culture through short stories, poems, art, and movies created by Mexican-American artists. For many students, the class is more than just an elective -- it is a powerful, life-changing experience. Research shows, and my classroom experience has confirmed, that ethnic studies courses have many benefits for students. For example, they: - Increase student attendance, grade point averages, graduation rates and college preparedness; - Contribute to the development of critical thinking skills; - Lead to more rigorous civic engagement; and - Foster a lifelong appreciation for art and literature.
