Location: Spartanburg, South Carolina
School: Woodland Heights Elementary School
Grade: 2nd

When it comes to teaching, Jed Dearybury goes the distance, even if that distance is 26.2 miles. When Hurricane Sandy prohibited him from running the New York City Marathon, Jed created his own marathon back home just a week later and invited 75 runners to join him, raising $13,000 for schools damaged by the storm. In 8 years of using DonorsChoose.org, Jed has had 98 projects funded -- from art supplies to create an art gallery on financial literacy; to a terrarium for "Spike" - the class bearded dragon; to stools, books, iPads and even a 3-D printer.

This year, DonorsChoose.org was proud to nominate Jed for the GQ Leader Award, which he received at The Gentlemen's Ball this fall. Jed has also received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching from the National Science Foundation, was among the top 5 contenders for South Carolina State Teacher of the Year this year, and he serves on boards for the LilySarahGrace Fund and the Palmetto State Teacher's Association.

Maria is in a league of her own when it comes to inspiring her students, on and off the softball field. During the day, she teaches English to students at virtually every reading level -- from advanced readers to those challenged with learning disabilities. Raising nearly $5,000 for her classroom, Maria provides her students with basic supplies, flash drives for compiling college application materials, white boards, colored paper, books and technology.

This spring, however, Maria had her most successful campaign to date, mobilizing 23 donors to support the Lady Broncos school softball team that she coaches. Maria knows that the teamwork and discipline her players learn on the field will help them succeed in the classroom, so she asked for safety equipment to replace the broken helmets and worn out gloves they'd previously used. She also requested a pitching machine, softball tee, and a video camera so her players could study their technique. In addition to outfitting an all-star softball team, Maria's project won her a chance to meet Whoopi Goldberg at a taping of The View as one of the winners of our Teacher Friends and Family Challenge.
