Our student body is diverse--African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic. Most receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many students struggle to make ends meet. Charging a fee for art supplies is out of the question. This year Visual Arts was not funded in respect to art supplies. I am imploring people and businesses in our community to contribute to our need; however, last spring our town was ravaged by a powerful tornado. The needs of those who lost everything in this storm took precedence in regard to donations from the community. I have exposed my students to professors, organized workshops with local artists, and assisted some students with scholarship applications for college. They need to know that their needs are important to us as teachers. No matter what their circumstances in life, I want to help them achieve high goals, develop creative thought processes, and ultimately assist them in becoming productive citizens.
