We have an award winning robotics program at Roosevelt MS. Our students have a great attitude and know we enter competitions with the purpose to learn, to share, and to have fun. If we win, that's fine, but that is not our main goal. We are a Title 1 school. Over 80% of the students are on free or reduced meals. Over 80% have a native language other than English. Many of these student don't perform well in a traditional classroom setting where they need to listen to a lesson, take notes, and memorize rules. However, when you challenge these same students with a hands on project like solving a maze with a robot, they suddenly become interested. This activity is fun and engaging. It teaches math and science concepts while the students are having fun. They think they are playing, but they are actually using the same techniques and concepts engineers and scientists use to solve problems in the real world.
