We are considered to be in a high poverty area. 57.3% of the students that attend our middle school are considered economically disadvantaged. However, they are very eager to learn. Sometimes they just need a concrete example. I have realized that they learn a concept best when they can see it in an authentic way. However, at this age, getting many of my students to read a book is not their idea of fun. For this reason, I have begun using book studies in the writing classroom.
