Our school is one of the largest elementary schools in the city of Chicago. With a population of over 1800 students in grades k-8, we are happy to boast about the fact the we have an attendance rate of over 95%. Yes, our students enjoy coming to school. Our school is designated as a Fine Arts neighborhood school with an open enrollment. My experience has thought me that many of the students entering the first grade do not like to write. For some it may be difficult for them to control the movement of their pencil on the paper, and others simply cannot come up with something to write about. Yet, the ability to write clearly and legibly is important for all students and we teachers need to provide additional help for our students to improve their writing skills. By incorporating arts and crafts during my writing sessions and journaling at this young age, I hope to prevent negative feelings towards writing in
