Our Robotics and Engineering Class is the only class in our district where students compete in BEST or FIRST Robotics. Therefore, the students come from multiple high schools as well as private and home schools in the district. Participation on a FIRST Robotics Challenge team provides an opportunity for students to apply from a pool of nearly $20 million in scholarships! The students are very diverse, with 30% female and 67% minorities. 100% attend college after graduation, most of whom major in STEM fields. Many receive scholarships and awards for their work. This is a student-driven program where I secure the materials and other resources the students request to help them learn the technologies they desire in order to be competitive. We meet Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays throughout the school year. During competition weeks, we meet every day after school. The students take our robots to community events and to businesses in support of STEM education.
