My students are in the 8th grade at a charter school in Pennsylvania that strives to provide every student with the resources necessary to attend a college preparatory high school. They are in need of more opportunities to experience literature that will promote empathy, compassion, and service. This year, we are partnering with a local non-profit that provides resources to implement service-based learning into our curriculum. All 8th graders will choose a social issue that resonates with them collectively, and they will research the issue in order to develop a service activity that connects. We also have daily reading periods that we hope to connect to this new program. Students will read novels that connect to the social issue they select, inspiring them to become more engaged and more active in doing something about it.
