I work at an alternative public high school in our little school district in Albany, Oregon. Students attend this school if they have demonstrated the need for a smaller learning environment, whether it be because they are credit deficient, need special attention, or because they have behavioral needs. The majority of the students at the school are here because of expulsions or credit recovery. Because we serve the vulnerable youth population, 80% of which are on free or reduced priced lunch, we take special care to make sure their educational needs are met in small classes with many hands-on and service learning opportunities. I cannot describe the number of times I have seen surprise on a student's face when they are passing a class or even getting an A in it. Our school is set up for success, no more than 15 students are allowed in each class, which means we are able to work with each student and help them individually.
