My journalism students are largely self-directed, with a hierarchy of experienced editors, and run a website they are rightfully proud of. Our school is classified as rural, fairly high-poverty (over 60%), but also featuring a large number of students from military families (over 75% of my current student reporters are sons and daughters of active-duty Army personnel). There are nearly 1,000 students in the building, yet the one local newspaper often does a poor job reporting on the things that matter to them. Being and staying informed is a challenge that my journalism students have accepted, and they do their best to reach their classmates with relevant and timely articles and photos.
