To grow up on the streets of Oakland is no easy task, but somehow, my students have found a way to overcome considerable obstacles and succeed in school and beyond. In my classroom, many different languages are spoken, four different continents are represented, families range in size from two to twenty-two. My students have lost loved ones to violence, substance abuse, and disease. All of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch due to living below the poverty line. And still, despite these harrowing factors, my students press on in pursuit of excellence. They see these "obstacles" as the source of their strength. They inspire me each and every day, and with your support, they will grow into individuals who have the courage and the knowledge necessary to change the world!
