Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a "Title I and Hard to Staff" school. What does this mean? "Title I" is granted to schools where the population is in poverty, and every student in my school receives free lunch and breakfast. "Hard to Staff" is exactly what it means, teachers come and go every year, due to our situation. This is a sad reality for our students because they do not have the opportunity to have familiar faces throughout their grade school years.
Our students have to endure life’s tough decisions on a regular basis, whether it is wondering how they will eat their next meal out of school or making sure they watch their younger siblings while their parents work more than one job to pay the bills.
With all that these students have faced in their short lifetime, they are the most determined and dedicated learners I have ever had the pleasure to meet.
To add to the list of obstacles these students must face. Our community recently suffered massive destruction and devastation due to Hurricane Irma. Although the storm has passed, it has not truly left us yet, as our families are struggling more than normal to make ends meet.
My Project
Science and character education have the highest regards in our school. We found our students learn how to be outstanding citizens as they grow into the educated and mature individuals that they are.
Our students are becoming influential leaders who will have an impact in our world, by learning about the role we as humans play in the ecosystems surrounding us.
Through our science curriculum, we guide our students in learning about the way of life, for example, the food chain. They learn how every organism in our planet has a purpose and is all interconnected in order to keep life going.
Our fifth graders have the opportunity to experience one way to make a difference in the world. They will be attending the Zoo School at Busch gardens to learn more about Zoologists and the impact they have on many types of species that are so valuable to our circle of life.
