Understanding personal space and feeling comfortable in a new environment is difficult for young learners, especially those who have not had the experience of formal learning. Students have trouble concentrating and staying on task when others are in their personal space.
Our kindergarten class is a very diverse and exciting group of learners.
There is a mixture of English Language Learners, Exceptional Education students, Gifted Learners, and normally advancing students. While our school is blessed with a supportive community many of our students are economically disadvantaged and find refuge behind the comforting walls of our building as a part of our school family.
My Project
We are in need of a cheerful classroom carpet that provides defined personal spaces for each student. In Kindergarten we spend the majority of our day away from tables and desks. We use our carpet for almost every single activity. Students may sit and listen to a story, work with a partner on an investigative activity, or be engaged completing an assignment independently. We fall in love with books, learn to work together while playing games, and most importantly begin to understand proper social and behavioral interactions with our peers.
A carpet, to some, may seem unimportant compared to common core standards, assessments, and academic learning.
However, to teach and inspire a young child, one must provide a safe, fun, and comfortable environment. Unless every need of the child is met, he or she will not be as receptive to the material being presented. Providing this carpet also provides each child with a home base thus fostering confidence, security, and increasing the retention of academic material.
