Yoga helps to make the mind and body STRONG! Many of the students who receive occupational therapy services could benefit from participating in classroom-based yoga to improve focus, self-regulation and overall strength.
I am an occupational therapist who has the pleasure of working with special education students in Pre-K through 5th grade in a public elementary school.
My building is overflowing with amazing students and dedicated staff, however unfortunately lacking available resources to begin programs that can really make a difference.
My Project
Many students on my Occupational Therapy caseload enjoy participating in yoga activities and it has resulted in improved focus and overall classroom functioning. With yoga mats and storage tubs available for each student in an additional classroom, we would be able to fully implement a school-based yoga program without having to sit on chairs or on the hard floor. We already have 12 yoga mats in our school but with a population of close to 1000 students we are in need of some more!
Donations to this project would be extremely beneficial to many of the special education students at my school.
Besides it's physical and cognitive benefits, yoga can empower my students and boost their confidence as they participate in a group activity they enjoy and excel at.
