We need these silk scarves and dye to host a community project that will invite parents, students, teachers, and others to create scarves to benefit the Visual Arts and STEM program.
The students submitting this project are in my After School Art class. They elect to take an additional course after school so they can experience more art in their educational offerings. The students involved are award-winning artists who routinely receive local, state, and national recognition.
The students developed this idea after seeing the beautiful scarf I made at my
State Art Conference. They were so excited by the idea of dying scarves, and knew we liked to have interactive activities during our fine arts night, that they decided we should offer this activity in addition to rocket building, printmaking, and other interactive activities.
They also thought that getting the community to make scarves would be a great way to help raise funds for the Visual Arts and STEM class to use towards purchasing new equipment for class or on a field trip.
Students will develop a variety of skills during this project, including how to lead others in scarf-dying by modeling and teaching routine, how to work with others towards success, and how to problem-solve around any issues that may arise when leading others through the process of making the scarves.
In Their Own Words
We want to make scarves at school that show our school spirit. These scarves would be sold and the money would then go to our Visual Arts and STEM program to help get new supplies, guest speakers, and field trips.
Mrs. Campbell would show the class an overview of how to make the scarf using the silk scarves and dye requested. From there, we would help answer questions. We would help other students make the scarves by dying them, and Mrs. Campbell would be there to support us if we did not know the answer to something. We would be taking the driver's seat, but Mrs. Campbell would be our passenger seat helper.
This project would give more money to our Visual Arts and STEM program, which could be used for all sorts of new learning opportunities. This could help us get more supplies which would allow us to make more art.
This also gets other people making art who may not have been able to do so, because at our school you have to choose between Art/STEM and Music. By doing this on our Fine Arts night, so many people will get to make art!
