This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As 11th graders, it is utterly important to be on a college ready path. In order to get there, they must read, read, read and expand their vocabulary. I can teach them skills to decode words, but when all of the words are above their level, it becomes hard to decode anything.
My students are eager to be in college.
They want more for themselves than what they see around them. Don't get me wrong, they are DEFINITELY typical rambunctious teenagers who get off track on occasion, but ultimately they want to learn, and grown and achieve scholarly success.
My Project
My students need constant access to a dictionary in order to improve their literacy and truly comprehend what they are reading. These dictionary/thesaurus combos will do one thing for my students: make them word wizards. While they read, they will use the dictionary to access every word that attempts to lock them out of higher learning. As they write, they will use the thesaurus to precisely and elaborately express their every whim, truth and nugget of knowledge.
These simple fortresses of language will simply allow students to take matters into their own hands.
It will give them a simple tool to always be able to access words that can stunt their comprehension. Something as simple as a dictionary/thesaurus will give my students constant access to understanding unfamiliar words and language.
