MTRS students are adventurous thrill-seekers who embrace living in a rural area and take every opportunity to be active outside. Many of our students live and work on farms, hunt, fish, hike, and camp. They have knowledge and skills unlike most people their age (not to mention adults!) We want to give them time to enjoy these things they value most during the school year. We have trails right in our backyard that are calling our names!
My Project
MTRS is excited to be offering students a Trail Walking class this Spring. Due to snow and ice remaining on the trails well into April, we are seizing an opportunity to broaden our skills! We have partnered RedFeather Snowshoes who have offered us a 50% discount on snowshoes as well as a curriculum specifically for school programs. We will also be purchasing and accepting donations for inexpensive ice cleats, for days where there is more ice than snow. These materials and curriculum will not only be used for the MTRS Trail Walking class, but after-school enrichment programs for the elementary schools in the Mohawk Trail Regional School District.
Being active outside is not only beneficial for students' physical health, but their mental and social health as well.
Fresh air and exercise during the school day helps students to focus better in class and can reduce overall stress. After the last two years, we could all use more of that! Best of all, this campaign is not just a one-time activity, but a long-term program that will benefit hundreds of students each year!
