Wiggle While We Learn

My students need 30 stability balls to use as their classroom "chair" to help improve their focus and aide in their natural need to move. They also need 6 dozen flying disks.

My Students

The days in my classroom are always eventful! I have 22 wonderful, smart, and active kindergartners! They like to move around while they learn! I try to create an environment that fosters movement during learning time. This helps increase their focus so that they can retain more information!

My kindergarten students are creative, smart, and very active!

They love learning! Especially when they get to move at the same time! Allowing them to be active while they learn has proved to increase the amount of information they can retain. Moving throughout the day also gives them the opportunity to have an increased amount of focus during learning time. As with all 5 and 6 year old children, my students feel a constant, natural need to move their bodies throughout the day. My students are very active learners in the classroom. They love to learn but there is just one big problem...they also love to wiggle. Students need a controlled way to move and wiggle as they learn. My goal is to create a classroom environment that allows them to move around the room whether they are at their tables during center time or on the rug

My Project

My students will use the stability balls instead of the chairs each day while they are at their center tables. Imagine how they will be able to move more freely on the stability ball without the confinement of a chair. The stability ball will be more comfortable for them to sit on while they learn. Replacing our chairs with stability balls would greatly benefit my students! The Frisbees will be used to hold the ball in place when stacked on the tables. Karen Lynch did a study and said, "When a child sits on a ball chair, they are able to direct their natural kinesthetic energy and need for movement in a positive way, allowing them to focus on their work more completely and reach their full potential as learners." James Roland also said, "When students sit on stability balls, both sides of their brains are engaged in keeping their bodies centered on the balls. And when the brain is stimulated, it's more focused on learning.

The stability balls in my classroom will have a huge impact on student focus.

I also feel that it will greatly increase my student's success in their learning and give them their opportunity to learn and wiggle at the same time!
