Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Community, independence, perseverance, and having a growth mindset are my students' classroom traits. They are trying to apply these to their learning and to closing the opportunity gap that has been already created for them in the area of literacy.

I have 25 six and seven year olds in my first grade class.

Twenty-three of them are African American and two of them are Hispanic. They attend a public inner city school in Texas. They come from a rough, dangerous neighborhood that does not value education. My students are a very energetic group who needs to constantly be engaged and stimulated to learn. If bored or not moving around they can become violent towards each other and uninvolved in their learning. My students need to be able to move and switch activities often during a lesson to keep their interest.

My Project

With the resources I have requested my students will be able to participate in an educational, engaging, and kinesthetic literacy block. This block will include Daily five centers of read to self, read to someone, writing, word work, and listening. The carpet will allow my students to each have an assigned space all their own where they can sit for whole group instruction such as read alouds, shared reading, model writing, shared writing, grammar and conventions, and phonics word work. The listening and writing centers will allow special areas for my students to go and work with all of the necessary materials. The timer will allow me to show my students visually and enable them to hear when it is time to switch stations. The partitions will allow me to assess their literacy skills and strategies at the end of the lesson with exit tickets and weekly assessments without having to worry about my students being pressured to look at their friends' work.

This project is so important to me because my students are facing many challenges in their education.

By providing them these materials they will be one step closer to reaching their goals and able to do the work that other students in different areas of the countries who have the resources are already able to produce.
