Where Have All The Pencils Gone?

My students need basic school supplies such a pencils, crayons, paper, colored pencils, erasers, and a pencil sharpener.

My Students

It's January and we are running dangerously low on basic supplies! Pencils and paper are hot commodities and all of the crayons are broken.

With a poverty rate above 30%, Buffalo, NY is the third poorest city in the country.

Many of my students do not have books in their homes which puts them at a disadvantage right from the beginning. Unfortunately, high schools in the Buffalo Public Schools only have a graduation rate around 50%. It is our goal to increase literacy skills at an early age to combat this startling statistic. In an impoverished school district, students do not come to school with all of their basic school supplies. Every year, I purchase these materials for my students so that they can have the tools that they need to succeed. Our school is working hard to make sure that students act and learn the "Wright Way." We have created an environment where excellence is an expectation and education is our highest priority!

My Project

My students need basic school supplies such a pencils, crayons, paper, colored pencils, erasers, and a pencil sharpener. Every day, we use paper, pencils, crayons, and erasers to do our work. Over the course of the last few months, my students have all but exhausted my stash of these necessary materials! I am requesting enough small boxes of crayons and colored pencils so that my young students can each have their own box. My students almost never come to reading group with their own pencil, so I supply them. At the end of the day, I sharpen every pencil in preparation for the next day's lesson. A working pencil sharpener would make this task so much quicker and easier!

When parents do not have the means to buy school supplies, that does not mean that their children do not still need them.

During my decade of teaching, I have spent thousands of dollars of my own money on these materials. My school does not provide teachers with a very large stipend to buy materials and with your help, we can start 2015 with a well stocked supply closet!
