Where did the time go!?!? This is what often happens when kindergartners are learning to work independently. Little ones haven't yet developed an internal clock that helps them monitor how quickly (or slowly) they are getting their tasks done and boy, do we have a lot to do in kindergarten!!!
Everyone comes to school excited and ready to learn!
My school is ethnically, racially, economically and linguistically diverse, with a large population of students who speak Spanish. We speak Spanish in my kindergarten classroom and for many of my students this is their first experience with school and all of the expectations that go along with it. Approximately 60% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
My Project
With the increase of more rigorous academic standards, higher benchmarks and standardized testing in kindergarten also comes an expectation that students will be able to work for a periods of time independently and be able to manage that time successfully. This is definitely a challenge for many students, but one way we can build students capacity to manage their time is by using individual timers that help students build on their ability to complete some independent tasks successfully within a reasonable amount of time. When students are practicing reading quietly from their book boxes or working on math games on the computer, they will be able to use the timers to help manage their time and be able to move on to the next task.
Individual timers and clipboards will help students begin to develop their independence and the time management skills that they need to succeed as they continue their academic careers.
