Teacher, what does U.S.S.R. mean? I realized that they were looking at a globe I had inherited when I took over a classroom this year. I saw that the Soviet Union and other counties who have been long gone or their names have changed were what they were seeing on this outdated globe.
I teach 95 gifted children in grades 3 through 6 in two rural schools in Alabama.
Gifted funding in Alabama is minimal and does not provide enough for these curious students. My students love to learn and need the latest information at their fingertips to understand and learn from the world around them. While I found myself in a great teachable moment, I realized the importance of my students having a current Earth globe to investigate.
My Project
My students desperately need to learn more about geography. I would love to incorporate geo-literacy into my classroom with these six explorer globes. Whether we are studying natural disasters, current events, or history, classrooms globes will be essential. Just pulling out the globes will make a connection to what we are studying to a place on Earth that is real and they can make connections within that framework. I've never seen a child not be fascinated at studying a globe of the Earth.
The study of geography will stimulate an interest in and a sense of wonder about places.
It will help my students make sense of a complex and dynamically changing world. Geography explains where places are, how places and landscapes are formed, how people and their environment interact, and how a diverse range of economies, societies and environments are interconnected. It will build own my student's experiences to investigate places at all scales, from the personal to the global.
