My students need a boombox for a listening center and headphones for our literacy centers! My students need to listen to great books in order to further develop their love of reading!
This year I have introduced my students to a new management system for literacy centers - the Daily 5. This is a well known approach for implementing literacy centers in the classroom. My students absolutely love the Daily 5! They get to read, listen to reading and write everyday!
This is my 14th year teaching at a K-8 Charter School.
This year, I have 20, 6-7 year olds, in our first grade classroom. They are an energetic, fun-loving little group! Several of my students just turned 6! They are very young and have different needs from my 7 year olds.
I want to provide opportunities for all of my students to listen to great children's literature during literacy stations. My students need experience listening for details in text and answering questions about story elements! Students need to listen to great literature in order to foster the love of reading!
My Project
We are fortunate to have added iPads to our classroom this year. The students complete numerous literacy activities on the iPad during our "Listen to Reading" time. We need headphones to use the iPads in our busy classroom. While some students are using iPads, others are reading quietly in our classroom library or working on writing stories.
It's important to minimize the noise level so students can concentrate on their individual tasks. In addition to iPads, my students would like to listen to books on CD, tape or iPod. Students need to hear fluent readers, listen to books for the pure enjoyment of it, and focus on story elements. My students complete critical thinking tasks after listening to stories.
Listening to Reading (books on tape/CD) and stories on the iPad are an important component of a well rounded literacy program.
I love the new technology we have available for our students!
They are learning so much in so many different ways. Individual headphones will allow my students to enjoy using the iPads and listening center while other students can enjoy completing independent activities during our literacy block! I'm very pleased with the progress my students have made so far this year in reading and writing! In only 12 weeks they have come so far. Please help them make the next big jump in literacy!
