Having a positive impact on our local community is a goal my middle school's science department has set for this year. We want to start a school garden to reclaim the neglected garden bed at our school, teach kids about botany, and to grow food for the hungry in our community.
We have a large degree of diversity at our school.
We have children from many different countries, socioeconomic backgrounds, and a large percentage of children with special needs. As a school we strive every day to tell our kids they have value! We care about them! We strive every day to make their lives at school enriching, and have some fun along the way. Our kids became so excited about this project when we mentioned that we wanted to grow the vegetables to give to the hungry. You could tell this really hit home for some of our children for a variety of reasons. They want to impact their community.
My Project
The Grow Lab and seeds will be incorporated into the science curriculum. We will be able to use the experience to teach the kids hands on about botany and soil which is a large part of our 6th grade curriculum. We will also use the experience as an enrichment activity for our kids who need to be able to have experiences that go beyond what they learn in the classroom. For example, we are hoping to ultimately use the garden as a research site for students. The Grow Lab will be utilized as our first step in this program of reclaiming our neglected garden area.
This project is only a beginning.
There is a lot of work ahead of us. However, my vision for the future is to have a place where students can come together to 1) learn about botany, 2) work towards achieving a difficult goal, 3) meet new friends, and 4) do something good for the community we are a part of. Every journey begins with a single step.
