We Want to Fall for Roald Dahl!-Book Sets for Author Study
My students need sets of the biography of Roald Dahl, "Esio Trot", "Fantastic Mr. Fox", and the audio collection of Roald Dahl's books for a literature and author study.
Do you remember when you fell in love with reading? My second graders are becoming fluent readers and I want to give them more than fluency passages and anthology selections. We want to learn about Roald Dahl and read his books together. These books are sure to light a fire for reading in my kids!
My students are a group of bright and funny 2nd graders who attend a Title I school in California.
They are smart and hard working and hungry to learn and achieve the goals they have in front of them. As our school continues on its upward trajectory, my students are entering 2nd grade reading and ready to take it to the next level! I want to put high quality literature into their hands. Kids who love to read will go places and that is what I want for my 2nd graders.
My Project
I have requested a class set of biographies about Roald Dahl, one of my favorite authors. We can read these nonfiction pieces and get some insight into his childhood and what formed his love of writing for kids. We will also visit his website which gives some great information about him. In addition, I have asked for sets of Esio Trot and Fantastic Mr. Fox. These are two great books that I know my students (and future students) will just love! They lend themselves to lots of opportunity to build vocabulary and I can just imagine the free writing we can do. I want to tie in other curricular areas such as math and science. Esio Trot is a wonderful book for this. When my students are engaged in these great books I will let them take the wheel and see where it leads us. The audio sets will come in handy to help students who are still working to master reading fluency gain access by listening to the text and following along.
This project is so important because my kids are used to reading anthology selections and fluency passages which can be a little boring.
These stories will be so much fun to read together and will create opportunities for feel good learning that I hope stay with my students as they move on through the years. They say people forget what you say and what you did, but never forget the way you make them feel. I hope to make my kids feel great about reading with Roald Dahl books!
