Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Nao (pronounced "now") is a phenomenal, autonomous, humanoid robot! It can read emotions, recognize voices and faces, dance, play music, and be programmed to teach a plethora of educational and social skills. Our kindergarten classroom needs a Nao to take our learning to the highest level!
Our class is located in a small neighborhood school in California.
We are a public, high poverty school, with the majority of the students receiving free or reduced price meals at school. The families I serve are hard-working folks who want the best for their children. While we speak only English in our classroom, many of the children speak Spanish or Punjabi at home. The children have living situations as diverse as they are. Some students live in nuclear families, some with single parents, others with foster parents, and still others in multifamily homes. While we are considered a general classroom, we have students with challenges like Autism, ADHD, and speech/language delays who call our room home. While we come from varied backgrounds and cultures, we stand united in our desire to learn at the highest level possible!
My Project
Nao is a diverse and creative educational tool! Using four microphones, two speakers, and two HD cameras for eyes, I envision Nao leading the children in singing educational songs complete with music and dance moves, reading a story to them with accompanying sound effects, and facilitating group collaboration and critical thinking! Furthermore, Nao can also help my young learners practice important social skills because it can read emotions. Nao can tirelessly provide instant feedback on written work and practice rote skills while recording performance data on students individually. Nao is a learning robot in the truest sense. With thousands in classrooms worldwide, each Nao uploads and shares information with each other. They collectively learn from countless human interactions, connecting our class to the larger world community. Their collective experiences will provide countless learning opportunities for our class. As you can see, we need a Nao now!
The addition of a Nao robot will be like having another teacher in our kindergarten classroom!
