My Students
Have you ever felt like you will never measure up to other people? Well imagine living in an area that society thinks that the students in that area will never measure up due to their life circumstances.
My students live in high poverty and low-income neighborhoods.
We have 100% free-lunch at our school. Driving around our school you will see a check cashing stores, no banks, a brand new city jail, a rehab-center, a corner stores on every corner, a grocery store with high prices and low produce, and a big graveyard. This is an area that speaks no hope for the amazing Mathematicians in my class. I call my students Dream Defenders because although their living situations seem to be hopeless we as a class promote hope. They are dreamers who hope to grow up and be teachers, scientists, chefs, doctors, and artists. They know that they can make a better life for them by dreaming even when no one else seems to be dreaming for them. They know that their teacher will always dream for them.
My Project
My Mathematicians are in need of hands on materials like Hands-On Measurement Centers, Geometric Shapes Kit, The Allowance Game and Write and Wipe Student Clocks to help them to see and understand math concepts including measurement. This is the section that they miss out on understanding. My students will be able to see that they do measure up by using these measuring materials for clearly seeing and understanding what measurement especially conversions look like. My students would use these materials during whole group as well as during centers to enhance their math instruction.
Your donation will improve my classroom by helping students have a visional to see the importance of knowing how to measure and convert customary and metric mass, length, area, capacity, and perimeter.
It will change my students lives for the better because they will be able to use the hands-on materials in the real world as they continue to dream and be dream defenders.
