My Students

Teaching kindergartners to read while they are still learning the alphabet, begins with them telling a story from looking at pictures. They then begin to learn sight words and to decode words. By the end of the school year, they need to be able to read and understand level D books.

I teach at a Title I school, with many underprivileged students.

They typically do not come to kindergarten with much experience with being read to, nor an appreciation for books. Many don't attend any type of preschool. I teach English Language Learners. They are eager to learn, but need the resources to progress through the early reading levels. I have purchased any books I have found at the lower levels, but my library still runs short of the books needed.

My Project

The books that I am asking for are going to make it easier for the children to find books on their level that they can read independently. It is going to allow the children who are reading already, to move on to harder text, while supporting the children who are struggling with reading. Once the children begin reading and develop a solid foundation for reading, their will be no stopping them academically.

Donating to this project will give the students in my kindergarten class a fighting chance.

It will give them a head start on first grade while allow them to do something they love...read.
