Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic about learning. They come to me with loads of energy and are so eager to learn. Imagine being told to sit still and focus all day. What if that only distracted you more because you were trying so hard to focus on sitting still? This is what happens to my energetic students.

All of my students are special education student- they are students with Autism, Learning Disabilities, ADHD, or Other Health Impairments.

These disabilities make learning more difficult for them. In addition, over 65% of my students are English Language Learners– many of these students are still learning how to speak English. Our school has the highest Hispanic population in the state. Our school also qualifies as a Title One School: over 85% of our students live in poverty and receive free/reduced lunch. Despite all of these obstacles, these students are eager to come to school each day. They always try their best and never give up when they face hardships. The students at this school are really special, and their enthusiasm and willingness to learn make teaching them such a joy.

My Project

Hokki core stools will serve two purposes for my students. The first purpose is that they will allow my hyperactive students a positive and safe outlet for their energy. It will allow them to move while they work without being distracting to others and in a safe manner. The second purpose is that Hokki core stools will give my students the ability to strengthen their core muscles. This is something that most of my younger students have difficulty with- many of them are currently in Occupational Therapy to help with these issues.

My students' overwhelming energy is the biggest challenge in keeping them focused.

These Hokki core stools will help to keep them focused. It will maximize my students' learning environment and relieve a lot of stress and tension that my students build up while struggling to focus and learn. We already have 4 Hokki stools in my classroom and the difference it has made is astounding. However, we do not have enough for every energetic student that needs them. Four additional stools will help us!
