Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Although I am a dynamic teacher, students learn best when they can link what they are learning to an actual real-world experience where they SEE, SMELL, HEAR, FEEL, AND TASTE. I want them to have this experience in Washington DC, as they better learn about U.S. history and how our government works.
My kids are insightful, industrious, and inspiring inner city middle school students.
The majority of them hail from low-income, non-English speaking homes and hard-working families whose volunteerism is the life-blood that keeps our school functioning as a warm community of academic rigor, creativity, and personal/community responsibility. My students care about making this world a better place, starting with their own community.
My Project
Students will be immersed in the Capitol of the United States, seeing democracy in action with: (1) protests expressing first amendment rights and (2) seeing where laws are made and meeting with our very own Senator.
Students will tour famous government buildings, as they review how the various branches of government work. We may even get to tour the White House.
We will honor women and men who have served in the armed forces, as well as learn more about the major wars of U.S. history.
We will remember the Jewish Holocaust and our role in World War 2 via the Holocaust Memorial Museum. We will also remember the exploitation of African and Native American peoples, as well as their land & resources which were crucial to creating our nation's wealth and security.
Lastly, we will see Yorktown Virginia where Commander Cornwallis surrendered his British troops to General Washington, thus marking the U.S. victory over Great Britain, which made the USA a nation.
This experiential learning field-trip to Washington DC will link what students are learning to an actual real-world experience where they SEE, SMELL, HEAR, FEEL, AND TASTE Washington DC, so that what they learn there will be stored in their memories in such a way that the memories are linked to their 5 senses, which means that the memories will be more vivid and, therefore, more easily remembered.
This will lead to greater understanding of what their rights and responsibilities are as citizens.
