My students need unicycles, helmets and ballet barres to learn to ride unicycles, emphasizing persistence and perseverence as part of our after-school unicycling club.
Many of our students need practice building stamina and persistence. Learning to ride a unicycle helps students set goals, monitor their progress, and through practice, achieve mastery! To quote Senator Bill Bradley, "Ambition is the path to success. Persistence is the vehicle you arrive in."
Our urban school is said to have the district's most diverse student population, serving many immigrant families from Mexico, Central America, Eastern Europe as well as Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, African Americans.
The energy this creates is palpable. With over 90% of our families qualifying for free and reduced lunch, extracurricular activities are often sacrificed for life's necessities. Our students deserve not only outstanding academics, but fun, goal-setting activities in a safe and trusting environment, their school. I'd love to channel our students' energy and provide a unicycling club.
My Project
I'll provide students with the opportunity to learn and practice unicycling skills for 45 minutes, twice a week, in our school gym. Students will set goals for themselves and focus on beating their personal best. Once students master unicycling basics, they can develop routines for fun and/or our school's talent show. Unicycles, ballet barres and helmets will allow this to happen. I can't wait to see them shine!
Your donation of unicycles, helmets, and ballet barres will provide a safe, new experience in building our students' stamina with a skill they would otherwise never encounter.
Learning and mastering riding a unicycle will give students the confidence to tackle academic challenges. Perseverance is the key to building stamina, and academic stamina will put our students on the path to success!
