My Students

It's what students SAY they want to do- dissect something! We study diagrams and use apps to simulate a dissection of a mouse and a frog. But nothing compares to the experience of carefully and accurately examining and dissecting an actual specimen.

The students I am requesting these materials for are in the 7th grade and attend middle school in the San Fernando Valley area.

They are wonderful students most eager to learn and do science. An authentic hands-on experience, as this project provides, puts the learning and inquiry into long term memory.

My Project

The fetal pig specimens requested have similar internal organ structure to ours. Color injections help us to find and see the circulatory system as well as all the organs. Students will work in small groups to do the dissection in stages over multiple class sessions. Carefully extracting a brain from a skull or stretching out a small intestine is something you don't forget!

We discuss the ethics of using animals in scientific research and in this case, education.

The fetal pig specimens are a by-product of the pork industry. Students who object to dissection are given an alternative activity.
