Do you remember learning to play an instrument as a child? I want my students to learn how much fun it is to learn a string instrument with world cultural ties.
My students are curious about world music and cultures.
I guess that comes from their equally curious music teacher - me! My students love music class and learning about different world cultures through music.
Our Illinois school is Kindergarten through 6th grade, with almost 800 students. We are a high poverty district, with over 70% of our students on free or reduced lunch.
My Project
My 5th and 6th grade students will continue and deepen their music studies by learning the ukulele. Many of my students ask to play my guitar, and some of them have limited experience with electric and acoustic guitar. The ukulele is a great instrument to teach the basics of strumming, note reading and rhythm to my older students.
Because my students come from low income families, they don't get many opportunities to play instruments.
During their General Music lessons with me, I would like them to have the opportunity to learn an instrument that is fun, functional and cultural. I would like to have the students perform concerts and smaller performance opportunities to boost their confidence.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
