My students need a Yacker Tracker as a way that they can monitor their own level of noise without me having to holler at them to quiet down.

My Students
It starts with a few students in the back quietly chatting about their last class. Then it slowly grows until every student in the class is gabbing away, talking louder and louder to be heard by their neighbor until the few trying to work can't even think.
Our school is openly called the worst in the state of Hawaii.
nearly 80% of the students are native Hawaiian, but live in what is considered the most impoverished part of the island. Even though this state is considered paradise, the students of this school often do not get to enjoy the benefits of living in such a place. The children of this school are among the most humble students on the island. Even though they have very little, they are always willing to share what they have with those who are without.
My Project
This device is able to track the decibel level in the room and will visibly and audibly alert the students when they are becoming too loud. So often the seventh grade students that I work with simply can't seem to help from talking to each other during class, no matter how many times I ask them to stay quiet. This is mostly due to the nature of that age group. Students in these middle years are just beginning to develop their need to socialize, and are hard pressed to keep to themselves. This device will help them to learn to control this need during class.
This device will have a great impact on all of my current, as well as future classes.
Student noise is one of the most distracting aspects of teaching middle school students, and with this, the kids will learn how to self monitor their noise rather than having the teacher bark at them to quiet down. When students learn to take ownership of their learning environment, everyone benefits and the children can learn more effectively.
