My students need engaging read aloud mentor texts so that my all students have access to great literature. This will help my students reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills.
The Mitten, The Hat, and The Gingerbread Baby, by Jan Brett, are all timeless kid favorite read alouds. Help us build and create new favorites by expanding our read aloud library!
It is immeasurable how diverse my fantastic first graders are.
From their cultural backgrounds, learning styles, to their personalities, they couldn'ÂÂt be any more different from one another. I teach in an urban public school with a special education inclusion cluster. Nine of my students have special needs, they are faced with many academic and social challenges on a day to day basis. I strive to provide the best learning environment and resources to meet all of my students needs and to be the best teacher I can. My students love learning and put a smile on face every day!
My Project
Imagine a room full of six and seven year old boys and girls who love to hear stories! All students love listening to stories read aloud to them. Common Core State Standards ask for students in the primary grades to participate in literacy activities through daily read alouds.
Read aloud is an integral part of our day as it provides students with a supportive environment that involves them in authentic reading experiences, which helps them develop strong reading skills. By having having a print rich environment, students are able to engage in supportive and meaningful discussions, responses, and activities that help build their comprehension skills, and reading achievement.
These books are called "Mentor Texts. The engaging picture filled books will allow the teacher to use age-appropriate text to introduce a skill or strategy. We will listen to the text, turn to our partner and talk, and then discuss how the stories can help us develop our literacy skills. When we complete a read aloud, I add the books to our classroom library so all my students can enjoy reading them independently!
The books I have requested allign with our Common Core literacy units, they will be able to be used year after year with each new group of 1st graders!
I am excited to post this project filled with engaging mentor texts that will make reading more entertaining and exciting for my students. The Mentor texts I requested will share the excitement, the suspense, the emotion, and the sheer fun of new books.
