My classroom is not your typical classroom; it extends beyond the four walls of the room to encompass all the other classrooms in the building as well as into the virtual realm. This library is a busy, engaging place where students search, locate and use information in a responsible manner.
We are a 6 - 8 grade middle school with a 45% free and reduced-price lunch program.
Our students come from underprivileged homes. Some have little to no access to the Internet or technology while they are at home. Students also have very little knowledge on the use of educational technology. In addition, these kids are hungry for knowledge and to see the world around them.
Unfortunately, their desires do not match their circumstances. These kids are still at an age where they want to learn and still have hope that they will be able to achieve the impossible. I want to show them the world that is out there waiting for them. I want to show them the places they can visit and the sights they can see.
My Project
These materials would be used with all students preliminary throughout the middle school, and then in the future throughout the entire district. Many of our students are not afforded the opportunity to travel outside their town. It is my goal to introduce to these students different experiences and locations they would otherwise never have a chance to visit.
Using Google Cardboard VR with basic cell phones would give students a way to travel throughout the world without leaving the building. The use of these resources fits seamlessly into all parts of our curriculum. In English, students can visit the settings of books to greatly increase comprehension. In Social Studies, students can visit locations they are studying about, such as the Roman Coliseum while they are studying about Ancient Rome, and in Science, they can visit different climates and landforms. All these experiences will help to build knowledge and understanding.
These donations will help students broaden their horizons by allowing them to see and experience locations that would otherwise have been out of their reach.
For students who have never and probably will never leave their hometown, this may be the only experience they get to see other places in the world. By using the Google Cardboard VR, I hope to inspire students to travel the world to enrich and broaden their lives and understanding.
