This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are on fire for music. All day, students are in my room making music. They are practicing, rehearsing, or listening to their peers make music.

Over 90% of our student body lives at or below the poverty line.

May students are from immigrant families and will be the first person in their family to graduate from high school. Students have jobs to help contribute to their household income. Poverty does not hold our kids back. They work hard, and are dedicated to the music program and to school. Music keeps many of our students in school, and helps them to have a goal and to graduate.

My Project

The strings on a stringed instrument such as a violin, do not last forever. Strings wear out over just a few months. Strings that are old or worn out cannot be tuned. If each instrument is not in tune, the entire ensemble will not be in tune. Poor intonation affects the tone quality of instruments and of entire ensembles. A set of cello strings can cost up to $300.00 each. For many students, the cost of new strings prohibits them from changing their strings regularly. With new strings, students will be able to play in tune and to have a clearer, more professional sound. This will help the entire program to score higher at competition.

This project will provide the basic materials needed for the orchestra program.

Strings are expensive and have to be replaced regularly. The school budget does not provide for regular string replacement. For students who own their own instrument, parents may have to choose between replacing their child's strings, and buying food or paying bills. New strings equal greatly improved intonation and tone quality. Improved sound will equal increased self worth.
