I teach in my school's Resource Room, where students come to work or test in a small setting. Unfortunately, since I can be assisting multiple students on different assignments simultaneously, this can be distracting, particularly to those enrolled in my class specifically for attention deficits.
Despite the variety of my students' disabilities, they attend a Magnet school in which they are expected to fulfill the graduation requirements for a four-year college.
Due to these high expectations, they take great pride in their work, which I think is reflected in their high aspirations and academic success compared to students with similar disabilities throughout our district.
My Project
On any given school day, various students may come to my classroom (the Resource Room) to either work or test in a small group setting, or make up a test due to absence. While this is part of the purpose of my classroom, another of its simultaneous purposes is for students of various grade levels enrolled in my class to gain assistance in the academic areas in which they struggle. This often causes distractions, particularly as many of the students who utilize the Resource Room do so largely because they are so easily distracted.
The items I would like to acquire via Donorschoose - noise-canceling earmuffs - will greatly assist in minimizing distractions as they are quite effective in blocking out noise. These items would better enable me to teach a lesson, or for students enrolled in my class to work together, without worrying that our doing so will distract those students who are there because they need a more quiet work environment.
These devices will allow us to appease a greater amount of students at a given time with a distraction-minimized setting in which to work or test.
During any given period, I may have different groups of students working together while others students read, work independently, take a test, or get assistance from me, thus it's not practical to expect a completely silent setting. However, in borrowing one of these devices, we have found it very helpful, so we are hopeful to acquire a class set.
